Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at the Kiev University (1918). Lived in Leningrad from 1933. In 1933-60, and again from 1969, he worked as a professor at the Leningrad State University. In 1942-45 and 1951-60, Alexeev was chair of the Department of Western European Literature (from 1948, Department of Foreign Literature); in 1945-47 and 1950-53 he was Dean of the Philological Faculty; in 1947-49 he was director of the Philological Institute of the Leningrad State University. In 1934-42, he held a professorship at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute, becoming chairman of the Department of World Literature in 1938. From 1934, he worked as a research assistant at the Pushkin Institute of Russian Literature, serving as Deputy Director of the Research Department in 1950-63, heading the Department of Pushkin Studies in 1955-57, and heading the Department of Russian and Foreign Comparative Literature Research from 1956. In 1959, he was appointed chairman of the Pushkin Committee of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1970, he chaired the Slavonic Scholars Committee and held the post of Vice-President of the International Committee of Slavonic Scholars. Alexeev was considered a scholar of encyclopaedic knowledge. His major works are devoted to the history of Russian Literature (Alexander Pushkin, I.S. Turgenev), English Literature and other European Literature, and their interrelation. In 1966-81, Alexeev lived in the House of Academics at 2/1 Leitenanta Schmidta Embankment 1/2 (memorial plaque installed).
