It was founded on the initiative of M. Gorky in 1920 at the same time as the Petrograd Committee for the Welfare of Scientists, named after Gorky in 1940. There were 33 departments in the House of Scientists, specialising in various fields. In 2002, it included departments for social economy and statistics, books and graphics, etc. Its library consists of over 70,000 volumes.
