It was founded in 1920 as the Northern Fishery Research Expedition of the Scientific and Technical Department of the All-Russian Council for National Economy, which was renamed as the Institute for Exploration of the North in 1925 and the All-Union Arctic Institute in 1930 and finally received its present-day name in 1958. The institute conducts comprehensive research of the Arctic and Antarctic environment. It has conducted over 1,000 expeditions including a series of expeditions to the North Pole and the Antarctic (from 1958), which resulted in the discovery of hundreds of geographical areas such as the Isles of Schmidt, Sedov, Dlinny, Domashny, Pioneer, Arctic Institute, Voronin, Ushakov, Wiese, etc., sea ranges of Lomonosov, Mendeleev, Gakkel, and Gagarin, as well as ice shelves, subglacial plains, etc. Among its members, A. P. Karpinsky, A. E. Fersman, Y. M. Shokalsky, N. M. Knipovich, L. S. Berg, O. Y. Schmidt, R. L. Samoylovich, V. G. Bogoraz-Tan, V. Y. Wiese, N. N. Zubov, P. P. Shirshov, N. N. Urvantsev and A. F. Treshnikov et al. have worked at the institute. The Arctic and Antarctic Institute has its own museum. The institute was situated in the former Sheremetev House at 34 Fontanka River Embankment till 1984, with monuments to members of the institute who fell during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 and a bust of R. Amundsen was installed in the garden in 1967 and 1974, respectively.

Reference: Арктический и Антарктический научно-исследовательский институт - центр российской полярной науки / Г. А.
