\n \n HOLY TRINITY AND ST PETER'S CATHEDRAL, located at Troitskaya Square. An 18th century architectural monument. The first wooden church on this place was built in 1709-11, by order of Tsar Peter the Great. In 1713, it was extended and a belfry with chimes was attached. In 1721, the Treaty of Nystad signed with Sweden was announced in the cathedral. It was here also that Peter the Great was offered the title of Emperor. In the same year the side-chapel of Venerable Chariton was attached to the building. In 1743-46, the dilapidated construction was replaced with a wooden church with the same design (architect I. I. Slyadnev). Icons for the new church were painted by I. Y. Vishnyakov and M. L. Kolokolnikov. After a fire in 1753-56, the cathedral was restored to its original shape (by architect S. A. Volkov), being considered a historical monument in St. Petersburg. In 1913, the cathedral was again damaged by fire. Plans for a new stone building were rejected. In 1914-24, the cathedral was restored to its original design under the guidance of architect E. I. Katonin. The Holy Trinity and St Peter's Cathedral housed the revered ancient icon of Our Lady of Greece and two things made by Peter the Great - a small marble icon Annunciation and an ivory church chandelier. The Holy Trinity and St Peter's Cathedral was ranked as the second St. Petersburg cathedral after St Isaac's Cathedral. The chapel in the House of Peter the Great, where the revered Icon of Christ the Saviour was kept, was registered as part of the Cathedral. The cathedral had a parish charitable society, which supported a hospice and a nursery. In 1933, the cathedral was demolished. In 2002-3, a memorial Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built close to Troitsky Bridge. The cathedral gave its name to Troitskaya Square and Troitsky Bridge.
