\n \n PRESENTATION OF THE HOLY VIRGIN CHURCH, located at Vvedenskaya Street on the corner of Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street. Constructed in 1793-1810 (architect I. M. Leim) in the Classicist style, replacing the wooden church of the same name (1732) and the adjacent stone Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin (1763-66). Originally, the church also had Tikhvin and Ilyin side-chapels and a wooden bell tower. Until 1838, the Presentation of the Holy Virgin Church belonged to the Ministry of Defense, and then became a parish church. In 1839-40, the side-chapels of St. Mitrophanis, Bishop of Voronezh, and St. Andrew of Crete, a stone bell-tower and two chapels were constructed to the designs of architect V. E. Morgan. In the early 18th century the Baroque iconostasis placed in Ilyin side-chapel was taken from the chapel of the same name. In 1857, heating was installed, and in 1903 the church was painted (artist P. P. Vechtomov). In 1872, the Church of Presentation established Petrovskoe Society, that ran a number of charitable organisations; in 1914, the Church founded the Christian Children’s Society. Academician I. P. Pavlov was a parishioner of the church. In 1932, the Presentation of the Holy Virgin Church was closed down and demolished, on its grounds a public garden was laid out. The name of Vvedenskaya Street originates from the Presentation of the Holy Virgin Church (Vvedenskaya Church).
