\n \n BOGOSLOVSKOE CEMETERY (2 Laboratornaya Street) is situated in the north-east of the city, between Mechnikov Avenue and Finlyandskaya Railway Line. Today, its area consists of about 40 hectares. The first Bogoslovskoe Cemetery appeared not later than the 1770s, and was named after a wooden St. John the Evangelist (Bogoslov) Church. People who died at the military hospitals of Vyborgskaya Side were buried there. In 1788, Bogoslovskoe Cemetery was abolished, in 1841 it was resumed at its current location. In 1915-16, a wooden Church to St. John the Evangelist was built \"in memory of warriors, perished in our present war\" (demolished in 1938). Until 1917, Bogoslovskoe Cemetery was considered to be one of the poorest in the city; no memorials of that time have survived. At Bogoslovskoe Cemetery, there are beds of honour in memory of participants of the Civil War and the Russo-Finnish War. During the Siege of 1941-44, over 100,000 of people were buried in mass graves at Bogoslovskoe Cemetery. After the war, Bogoslovskoe Cemetery became a cemetery for the elite. Among persons buried here are: surgeon P.A. Kupriyanov, pediatrician M.S. Maslov, surgeon V.A. Oppel, zoologist E.N. Pavlovsky, E.L. Orlovsky – who lead the project for photographing and mapping the dark side of the Moon, academician I.A. and L.A. Orbeli, prime constructor S.P. Izotov, academician B.P. Konstantinov, electricians M.A. Bonch-Bruyevich, A.M. Chatelaine, psychologist V.N. Myasishchev, conductor E.A. Mravinsky, composer I.I. Dzerzhinsky, ballet-master L.V. Yakobson, writers V.V. Bianky, Y.P. German, A.B. Mariengof, A.A. Prokofyev, L.V. Uspensky, E.I. Charushin, E.L. Schwarz, literature theorist O.M. Freidenberg, film-director V.R. Gardin, F.M. Ermler, artists and sculptors G.S. Vereysky, V.A. Galba, V.I. Ingal, V.M. Konashevich, N.M. Suetin, V.L. Simonov, R.K. Taurit, artist V.A. Chistyakov, Kino rock-band leader V.R. Tsoy. Among the buried there are Heroes of the Soviet Union A.I. Marinesko, N.P. Simonyak, etc., Leningrad Soviet Chairman A.A. Sizov. There are grave-stones of M.K. Anikushin, L.K. Lazarev, V.G. Kozenyuk.
