Took courses taught by the Chancellery for Urban Planning, worked on the construction site of the palace in Peterhof. In 1776-86, was appointed assistant of architect of Y.M. Felten for the construction of the main building of the Academy of Fine Arts. From 1786, he supervised the construction of the palace in Pelle, designed by architect I. E. Starov (has not survived), from 1792 assisted G. Quarenghi in the construction of the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo. Teamed with Starov to work in Gatchina and Tsarskoe Selo. In the 1790s, rebuilt Anichkov Palace, Marble Palace, and the palace in Ropsha. In 1797-1800, he took part in the construction of Mikhailovsky Castle; in 1803 reconstructed the Central Post Office. Sokolov's most significant work is considered the corner building of the Imperial Public Library (1795-1801; see Russian National Library), an example of late Neoclassicism. There are his existing rebuilt versions of: Church of Our Lady of Tikhvin (1784-87) in the Putilovo village, in the vicinity of the New Ladoga, in St. Petersburg I.L. Lazarev's house at the I13 Talyanskaya Street (1799-1802) and Sokolov's own mansion (1788-90) at 105 Griboedov Canal Embankment. Sokolov's creative manner is distinctive through laconicism and stylistic unity. He is buried at Volkovskoe Orthodox Cemetery.

Reference: Коршунова М. Ф.
