Since 1902, resided in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the Civil Engineering Institute (1912). Leading artist of the Leningrad avant-garde school, from the early 1920s, sought formal new architectural alternatives on the basis of abstract geometrical forms, later elaborated the principles of suprematism, applying them within the constructivism functional method. His pioneering pursuits found embodiment in the experimental projects devised between 1926-29 as well as in the design of Krasny Putilovets Club (1927-29, not intact). One of the projectors of the first residential districts in the Traktornaya Street (1925-27) and the Serafimovsky district, residential district (29-35 Stachek Avenue, 1925-29, both - in collaboration with A.I. Gegello and G.A. Simonov). The Tenth Anniversary of the October Revolution School (5 Stachek Avenue, 1925-27) - is an example of the Leningrad Constructivism trend. Its most representative examples are the Round Bath Houses (29а Karbysheva Street), Ushakovsky Bath Houses Giant (8 Oboronnaya Street) and the Industrial School (22 Politekhnicheskaya Street). Nikolsky's largest construction is the Kirov Stadium (1932-50, in collaboration) on the territory of the Victory Park in the Primorsky District. He lectured at the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineering (1927-32) and at the Academy of Arts (1933). Chaired the Leningrad branch of the USSR Union of Architects (1948-53). Stalin Prize laureate (1951). Buried at Literatorskie Mostki.

Reference: Оль Г. А. Александр Никольский. Л., 1980; Повелихина А. В. Александр Никольский // Зодчие Санкт-Петербурга, ХХ век.
