Coming from the family of French descendents. He was the farther of Albert N. Benois, L. N. Benois and A. N. Benois. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (1836), he was the member of the academy (1847), a professor (1858, according other sources, since 1857), an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts (1896). He served at the Study of His Imperial Majesty (from 1847), was the Architect to the Supreme Court (from 1846), Chief Architect of Palace Administration (from 1850), he was in charge of the Technical and Urban Planning Department of the City Council (1872-97). He was one of the founders, and a representative (1890-93), an honorary member (1893) of the St. Petersburg Society of Architects. He was a member of the City Duma (from 1868). Benois’ works are characterized by innovation, the ability to place a building into the historical sphere. In Peterhof, he designed a complex of buildings of Court (Neo-Gothic) stables ( 1 Aleksandriiskoe Highway, 1848-55), two Ladies-in-Waiting houses ( 7 and 8 Aleksandriiskoe Highway, 1853-58), the building of the post office (15 Sankt-Petersburgsky Avenue, 1850-54), the Main wing of the Palace Hospital (20 Sankt-Petersburgsky Avenue, 1857-60), Official House (7 Kalininskaya Street, 1859-61), Verkhnesadsky House (11 Pravlenskaya Street, 1861-68), the railway station (1854-57); as well as railway stations in Strelna (1856), Sergievo (1855-57), in Krasnoe Selo (1858). Benois dedicated himself to the restoration of the Great Palace and Park in Peterhof (1850-60s). He erected a complex of buildings of the training forest district in Lisino (1852 - the early 1860s); in St. Petersburg: Church of Visiting of Our Lady on Vyborgskoe Catholic Cemetery (23 Mineralnaya Street, 1856-59), a wing of Sheremetev Palace ( 34 Fontanka River Embankment, the yard, the left wing, 1867), apartment houses ( 84 Moika River Embankment, 1869-70; 39 Mayakovskogo Street / 15 Ryleeva Street, 1873-74). He lived in his own house on 15 Glinka Street / 37 Rimsky-Korsakov avenue, was buried at the Church of Visiting of Our Lady in Vyborgskoe Catholic Cemetery (the tombstone has not survived).<br/><br/>References: Петров П.
