It was renamed after playwright A. N. Ostrovsky (1823-86). The square was designed by architect K. I. Rossi in 1816-34 on the territory of Anichkov Palace between Sadovaya Street and Fontanka River Embankment. Ostrovskogo Square, Zodchego Rossi Street, and Lomonosova Square together make up a single magnificent ensemble of Empire architecture forming a large district in the centre of St. Petersburg. Pavilions of Anichkov Palace facing the square were erected in 1810. Alexandrinsky Theatre was built in 1828-32 (hence the former name) to become the centre of the composition. The ensemble of the square includes the buildings of the Russian National Library situated at numbers 1 and 3. Among the buildings dated between the mid-to-late 19th century and the early 20th century are building 2 erected by architect A. A. Grechannikov for the Society of Moskovskaya-Vindavsko-Rybinskaya Railway in 1911-12 and now accommodating the Head Office of Oktyabrskaya Railway; house 5 - the former apartment house designed and owned by architect N. P. Basin in 1878-79; building 7 erected by architects V. A. Schreter and E. G. Yurgens for St. Petersburg City Credit Society in 1876-79; and building 9 erected by architect G. I. Winterhalter for the Russian Music Society in 1874. A park was laid out in the square in 1820-32 (see Ekaterininsky Park). A monument to Catherine II was opened in 1873. See references under K. I.
