It was named in 1866 after the building of Mikhailovsky Manege (1798-1800, architect V.F. Brenna; 1823-24, architect C.I. Rossi ). On sides of the facade adorned with 5-arched doorways and the mighty attic with military armature, there are symmetrical front-ends of stables, designed as pavilions with loggias. Until 1917, the manege served as a venue for military training and ceremonies, exhibitions and festivals. During the First World War of 1914-18, the armoured division quartered there. On 1(14) January 1918, V.I. Lenin spoke at the historic political mass-meeting, after which he was assassinated. In 1948, the building was redesigned into the Winter Stadium. The prospect of Klenovaya Alley, designed by Rossi, and the sight on the Mikhailovsky Castle were closed with the building of His Imperial Majesty's Own Officers' Corps (1908, architect B.I. Segen). At the far end of Staro-Manezhny public garden (1830s), an \"elite\" residential building was constructed (1999-2000, architects M.A. Reinberg, A.G. Sharov, et al.), with the monument to I. S. Turgenev placed in front of it in 2001 (sculptor Y.Y. Neiman, V.D.Sveshnikov, architect G.K. Chelbogashev). On the south part of Manezhnaya Square, at the corner of pedestrian Malaya Sadovaya Street, there is the house of Noble Assembly (27 Italyanskaya Street). Building 12 on Karavannaya Street is the former house of Petrograd Credit Society (1914-16, architects K.S. Bobrovsky, B.Y. Botkin), today Cinema House. In the west part of Manezhnaya Square, there is Novo-Manezhny Public Garden (1878-79) that features the monument to Grand Prince Nikolay Nikolaevich the Elder in 1914-18. In 1998-99, the public garden was reconstructed, and a fountain by architect G.L. Sholokhova was installed. In 2003, (as the gift of Milan on tercentenary of St. Petersburg) busts of architects F.B. Rastrelli, A. Rinaldi, G. Quarenghi and C.I. Rossi (sculptor V.E. Gorevoy) were placed in the garden.

Y. M.
