The name is caused by the nature of the ground. In the second half of the 18th century, here a settlement of Construction Chancellery was founded; its building up followed a strict regular layout design. In 1781-88, the Nativity of Our Lord Church was erected in the centre of Peski (demolished in 1934), it gave its names to the ten Rozhdestvenskaya Streets (today First-Tenth Sovetskie Street) and Rozhdestvenskaya Part. In the late 19th - early 20th centuries, the territory was mainly built up with multi-storied apartment houses. With the construction of a plant for alcoholic drinks producer Liviz, thermoelectric power station № 2, Kirov Spinning-Mill, Karavay bread-baking plant and other enterprises, an industrial zone formed along Sinopskaya Embankment.<br/><br/>Е.
