\n \n NOVAYA DEREVNYA, a historical district in the north-west of St. Petersburg, on the right bank of the Bolshaya Nevka River, in the west it borders on Staraya Derevnya, in the east it is confined by the Chernaya Rechka River, in the north by Bogatyrsky Avenue, that divides Novaya Derevnya from Komendantsky Aerodrome. In the mid-18th century, chancellor A.P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin settled his serfs here and called the settlement Novaya Derevnya (New Village) (as distinct from the neighbouring Staraya Derevnya (Old Village)). In the 19th century, Novaya Derevnya was a dacha area. Here Alexander Pushkin with his family, A.S. Griboedov, M.I. Glinka, I.S. Turgenev and many other celebrities rented summer cottages. Local restaurants Livadia, Arkadia and especially Villa Rode enjoyed wide popularity, singers L.V. Sobinov and F.I. Chaliapin gave summer theatre performances. In 1894, a line of Primorskaya Railway St. Petersburg-Sestroretsk went through Novaya Derevnya (until 1930s, its railway station was located on the place of building 15 along Primorsky Avenue). The territory to the south of the railway had been almost thoroughly built up with residential houses by the 1910s, to the north - with industrial enterprises (Shadrin Chemical Processing Plant, etc.). During the Siege of 1941-44, wooden houses were either destroyed by fires or demolished to get firewood. In the late 1940s, the reconstruction and accomplishment of the region were launched: first standard low buildings (so-called German cottages) appeared in the area between Serebryakov Lane and Shishmarevsky Lane. In the early 1950s, new blocks of buildings arose to the east of Shishmarevsky Lane. In the middle of the 1960s, the west of Novaya Derevnya was built up with standard 5-storied brick houses. Main thoroughfares are Primorsky Avenue, Savushkina Street and Shkolnaya Street. In 1982, Chernaya Rechka metro station was opened. In the 1930s-80s the territory in the region of Polevaya Street and Sabirovskaya Street were occupied with utilities, industrial and motor transport enterprises; the Neva Bakery and Confectionery Plant, Kronos Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Plant, furniture works and other businesses are located here. To the north of the railway, there is Serafimovskoe Cemetery. Among the architectural monuments are Saltykovs' summer residence including a garden (1837-43; 4 Akademika Krylova Street), Shishmarev's summer residence including a garden (1824-25; 87 Primorsky Avenue) and the Holy Annunciation Church (1805-08, 79 Primorsky Avenue).
